Fall Convention 2008

October 3-5, 2008

Fall Covention in Louisville

by Gary Garitson, Cardinal District Director of Events

Now is the time to make your plans to attend the Cardinal District Fall Convention, October 3-5 in Louisville, KY. We are returning to the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center for the last time in this venue; our conventions move north to Indiana in 2009 - 2010.

During the fall convention, we’ll select the Cardinal District representatives to the International Chorus Contest scheduled for next July in Anaheim. Will the guys from Kentucky Vocal Union repeat as our representative chorus? Or, will the men from Louisville, Terre Haute, Indianapolis, Ft. Wayne, South Bend, or another chorus prevail at this contest? Time will tell!

We’ll also crown the 2008 District Quartet Champions at this convention. There are a number of up-and-coming quartets who have a legitimate shot at the title.

In addition, we’ll be crowning the District Senior Quartet representatives to the International Seniors Quartet Contest at this convention. These guys will also benefit from your enthusiasm and encouragement of their performances as they vie for the right to represent the District in Pasadena in January 2009.

The Clarion Hotel and Conference Center gives us the opportunity to have our convention all in one location. Once you arrive, you really don’t need to get back in your car until it’s time to head home on Sunday! Our rooms, hospitality suites, restaurants, and contests are all under one roof. Let’s face it; it just doesn’t get any more convenient than this! But, if you want to eat outside the hotel complex, there are plenty of quality restaurants within a 5-minute drive from the hotel.

The Cardinal District House of Delegates will meet at 1 o’clock on Friday afternoon. The agenda was not set at the time this article was written. However, discussion will span many topics of interest to all our chapters, including election of District officers for 2009. Please make sure you chapter delegate is there!

We know that convention costs are a recurring concern for our membership. We’ve negotiated the room rate at the Clarion to be same this year as we had the last time we were here – just $89.95 per night! Convention registration costs are also the same - $35 for adults, $15 for juniors. The registration fee provides admission to all three contest sessions – Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night! And, you can get a $5 discount on your convention registration if you register prior to September 19.

Needless to say (but I will anyway) now is the time to make your reservations and order your convention registrations. The Housing and Registration forms are in this issue of the IN-KY NOTES, and you can also find them on the Cardinal District website.

Once again, plan on joining us at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Louisville, KY the weekend of October 3-5, 2008. It promises to be an exciting weekend of barbershop harmony…one you’re surely going to want to be a part of.

On a personal note, this is my last official duty as the District Director of Events. I am taking an overseas assignment with my company. My wife and I will be in Sweden (outside Stockholm) for the next year. I won’t be at conventions for awhile, but I plan to keep tabs on what goes on within the district. I appreciate your past support of our activities, and continue to encourage EACH of you to do your best to help our Chapters, our District, and our Society to succeed in their endeavors.

May God bless each one of you. If all goes as planned, I’ll see you next fall in Columbus, IN!!
